Northern Seed Extra: Limagrain Cereal Seeds’ new Rebel is a top-yielding variety with solid protein content.

The newest hard red spring wheat release from the Limagrain Cereal Seeds breeding team is LCS Rebel, a top-yielding variety with solid protein content. The variety’s agronomic features and in-the-field performance make it uniquely suited for the needs of Northern Plains farmers.

“Over the past two seasons, we’ve invested a lot of time evaluating the needs of our dealer network and the customers they serve in an evolving Northern Plains market,” explains Zach Gaines, LCS marketing manager. “What we’re seeing and hearing is a demand for ‘safer’ varieties — dependable protein content without giving up yield potential.”

Competition among wheat breeders in the Northern Plains has increased considerably over the past five years, and the top-tier level of wheat varieties produced by these programs is continuing to push the potential of yield-protein correlation.

“The farmers we work with are really liking what they see with LCS Rebel so far,” says Russell Oberg, LCS regional sales manager. “It is a fantastic-looking variety in the field, with exceptional uniformity. The seed producers we work with are seeing great yields, with protein levels above 14%.”

LCS Rebel has a medium-early maturity and a medium plant height. Its straw strength is good, rated between a 2 and 3 on a 1-10 scale (where 1 is the best possible). LCS Rebel also scores well for end use — the hard red spring wheat’s test weight, milling quality and baking quality have all been rated Very Good by the LCS quality laboratory.

“We’re always going to have one or two varieties in our portfolio that are capable of producing unbeatable yield, but our team is really excited about the direction LCS Rebel is taking us,” says Gaines. “We are pushing the limits of how much yield you can pack into a 14.5%-protein wheat with this release, and we have several varieties on deck that will push them even further next season.”
