Strategic Framework for Import Safety Presented to President Bush

An interagency group has developed a strategy to strengthen import safety.

Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns commended Mike Leavitt, Secretary of Health and Human Services, for his leadership of the Interagency Working Group on Import Safety.

Leavitt traveled the country discussing import safety and gathering ideas from those involved in the import business as well as seeking input from the twelve federal agencies that were part of the working group. The strategic framework for strengthening the U.S.'s import safety was presented to President Bush on Monday.

"The Strategic Framework will serve as the foundation for an Action Plan being developed by the working group, which we hope to present to the President in November," says Johanns. "The action plan will provide specific short- and long-term recommendations."

Secretaries Johanns and Leavitt are traveling to Kansas City, Mo. Wednesday to tour a meat processing plant and hear recommendations from Midwest producers on how to strengthen import safety.

Johanns is hosting a public meeting in Washington, D.C. in October to gather comments on import safety. For more information on the public meeting, the comment period and other import safety issues, click HERE.
