The National Pork Board is meeting Monday through Wednesday in Des Moines. Pork Checkoff Chief Executive Officer Chris Novak says the 2012 budget will be finalized
"It is a budget process that starts with producers," Novak said. "We've got more than 200 producers that make up the committees of the National Pork Board. They provide input in terms of the types of programs and activities they would like to see their checkoff dollars invested in. We bring a group of 60 producers together in September to really work through the details of that budget plan and then our board issues its final approval in November before we submit that to the U.S. Department of Agriculture."
Novak says the budget reflects the priorities of the Pork Checkoff.
"There is a heavy focus on continuing the Pork: Be Inspried and wanting to ensure that we've continued the momentum that we've achieved with the brand launch," Novak said. "Larger investments in international marketing and then certainly the other piece of the story is our "We Care" initiative and how we help consumers learn more about pork production today; why we do the things we do and help them understand how we used animal health products, why we have animals indoors, and the ways we are working to protect and enhance and provide better care for our animals and better care for the environment.”
